Out of the Blue

A couple of men rang the doorbell this afternoon and since I was "reading" Pat answered the door. The men were interested in a farm machine on our neighbor's property and when they saw our windmill lying in the yard, they were also interested in that. Hallelujah! Originally, Pat & I were going to restore the old windmill but as time went by that became a much less interesting project especially since we couldn't find anyone to restore it. Pat asked me how much I wanted for it and I said I would pay the men to take it away but Pat being of a more sensible nature in this case ended up getting $150 for it. The men want to use it to pump water into their pond - I'm glad that it will be functional again even though not on our property. I had "do something with the windmill" on my to do list for soooo long - I got to mark through that today.

Lots of Ladies

Thanks to Elizabeth for hosting a ladies weekend in Austin last weekend - 10 of us or 12 if you count two toddlers experiencing their first ladies weekend. It was interesting, noisy, hectic and fun. Eliz made some excellent homemade ketchup and mustard for the hamburgers on Friday evening and homemade pasta for the spaghetti on Saturday evening. Sunday three males got to join the Sunday brunch and Easter egg hunt. Thanks to Jenny, Meredith and Rita for some tasty desserts and potato salad.

Community Theatre

Last Saturday evening we went to Lawrence to see "The Miracle Worker" at the Lawrence community theatre. Ordinarily, we wouldn't have even thought of going but our friend, George, had a small role as the headmaster at Annie Sullivan's school. It turned out to be a very good production - there were some weak points but nothing that made you want to leave. For those that haven't seen the play or the movie, it is the story of how Annie Sullivan was able to get through to Helen Keller who was blind, deaf and dumb. The playbill bio for George was cute - there isn't a lot of thespian activity in his background but it mentioned that he had been an extra in "North Country".

Scorched Earth

Three huge piles of tree limbs have been in our back pasture for about two years. Yesterday, Pat decided it was time to burn them. He could only get to one pile and got it going. The fire spread over the pasture burning all of the dead growth as well as the pile of tree limbs. I wasn't too worried although didn't like to hear Pat say, "I kind of wish I hadn't started this - hope it doesn't get to Leavenworth county." He did have to water down a couple of areas but otherwise it is all okay. There was a big, old, dead tree that we thought was kind of picturesque especially with a hawk sitting in it, but it slowly burned down as well.
