Lewis & Clark

This part of the world is heavy into the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Lewis & Clark expedition which occurred (as of course you have already calculated) in 1804. The presentation last night at AAUW was by the event organizer for the Lewis and Clark celebration in our area. It is pretty impressive how much a small town like Atchison is doing. The events scheduled for July 3rd and 4th that look the most interesting to me are the "Step-back-in-time 1804 village"; toast with one Gill of whiskey (they won't really give away whiskey) and the encampment of the keelboat and pirogues of the Discovery Expedition. The Boy Scouts are also in the process of creating a fur trader encampment in one of the bluffs along the Missouri river.

Cynthia:

Well, buy your ticket, Leah! Of course in July, you might have to fly from Houston to Chicago to make use of the ticket!

Eliz - where did you see the book about Atchison?

Daughter:

That does sound pretty neat. In this incredibly huge book about Atchison that I've come across in my family history research (who knew there could be more than 1000 pages of stuff to say about Atchison?), there is a pretty detailed description of a fur trading outpost on a Missouri riverbank--I wonder if that's what the Boy Scouts are using as a guide or starting point for their exhibit?

Leah:

That might be a fun event for which to plan a visit to the Heartland! BTW, Southwest has a sale of $34.00 one-way, Kansas City - Chicago. Tickets must be purchased by midnight on 31 January, I think.
