Jonathan experienced his first fireworks last night at a fireworks display in Atchison. He was pretty impressed and handled the loud bangs well even chiming in by yelling "bang". Before we went, we told him we were going to a fireworks show and about halfway through the fireworks he asked when the show was going to start! It was held at the high school stadium and before the fireworks there were silly games including a water balloon toss for adults, which Elizabeth talked Pat into doing. They didn't last long; Elizabeth didn't catch the water balloon and it broke at her feet.
For a small town, Atchison did a good job and it was certainly nice not to have to battle crowds to get there. The last time I tried to attend a fireworks display, Elizabeth was a little girl and Kathleen and I were going to take her to the Memorial Park fireworks display in Houston. We inched along on the freeway and then in Memorial Park and never got in to the fireworks.

Cynthia, I do remember that July 4th. I've always wanted to try it again. I remember driving down Memorial (?) and all the cars were stopped and we thought our situation quite ridiculous. Okay, we (John, Courtney, Matthew, and I and Frank, a co-worker) joined Tim & Felicia on Lake Conroe for an afternoon of skiing and watched the fireworks from the boat. There were probably 70 boats, all with motors turned off, and we were rocking gently while we watched the fireworks display. It was such a pleasant way to watch the fireworks. We were a bit worried for a few seconds when it seemed Tim couldn't find his way back to Felicia's uncle's dock. That's the nice thing about a lake...just follow the edge of the lake until you figure our where you are....

Sounds like a very nice time. Wish I could have been there too. However, mother and I had a very nice time as well at the fireworks display in Arlington. We did not inch to get there...but we sure as hell inched getting out of there. It took almost an hour to get home. Under normal conditions, the drive would take about 15 minutes.
