I finally finished entering my dad's diary - for anyone interested go to our home page and click on "Doc's Diary". I wanted to get it all written down and this way I can print a hardcopy as well as share it. With all the talk of war these days, this little diary brought home in a personal way how awful war is. There are times when war is a necessity, but this is not the time.

Cynthia, I spoke with my friend, Van, who offered some insight to parts of the diary and he said again how much he really enjoyed reading your father's account of his participation in the war.

Leah - thanks for the info about "shellback" - I didn't know what it meant. Maybe I'll insert a link in the diary!

I read the entire diary last Friday night and found it interesting. You may be intrigued to know that the "shellback" tradition continues. As with many Navy traditions, the process is swathed in mystery. That assumption is totally wrong. Go to Google and enter "shellback initiation" and you will be led to more info than you want. When a Sailor crosses the equator for the first time, he is eligible for shellback initiation. Honors accumulate upon multiple equator crossings.

Well done for getting it transcribed. You too may become a family history freak like me!
